This product does what it says it does on the softride website, but here on Amazon the description is perhaps a bit ambiguous and/or misleading. If you have a softride bike rack (dura, versa or HD), this extender is intended to replace the hitch bar that is currently part of that rack and give you an extra "4 to 8 inches of clearance". It gave me exactly an extra 4" on my dura assist bike rack, but maybe the other racks mentioned come with a shorter hitch bar initially so you might get up to 8" depending on what you're starting with.If you have any other bike rack, this product will be useless to you! It is not a universal hitch extender it is only an extender for a particular kind of rack.
To install this extender you have to remove the hitch bar on your current compatible rack (remove 2 bolts and loosen one) and replace it with this bar using the same nuts and bolts - this extender is just a hunk of steel, no hardware included. You also have to remove the anti-rattle bolt from inside the original bar and place it into this bar. Then attach it to your 2" hitch using the hardware that came with your compatible bike rack.
Here's what it says on Amazon:
1. Includes QuietRide anti-rattle tightening hitch bolt and lock
No, it absolutely does not!!! You have to use the hardware that came with the rack that you are extending.
2. For Dura, Versa or HD Racks
Only!!!
3. Powder-coated Steel
Yes.
4. Replaces existing hitch bars
... of the Dura, Versa or HD rack (only) that you already own.
5. For 2" receivers only
Yes.
It worked perfectly for extending my softride dura assist bike rack by 4".
