Car Roof Bike Rack / Roof Mounted Bicycle Carrier Review

I ordered this product to carry my kids' bikes when we go for family bike rides. I already had two Yakima roof racks for my wife's and my bikes, and I really didn't want to spend $200 for two more Yakima racks, so I gambled with these. These racks do what they are supposed to do, carry bikes safely and securely. However, don't expect them to be easy to assemble or to work the way the directions say they will.

When I tried to assemble the racks according to the directions (which weren't all that clear), they were unstable and wobbly. I did not feel that it would be secure or safe to carry bikes on them. I was able to do so improvisation, though. I replaced most of the nuts and bolts that were included with new bolts and lock nuts. I also found it necessary to use the U bolts upside down from how the directions said to use them. All in all, I probably only spent around $7.00 for new hardware for the two racks that I purchased. With a purchase price of $27 each, this is still far cheaper than the cost of the Yakima racks I was also considering.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this product for someone who doesnt' want to spend a lot of money and who is handy and able to come up with alternate ways to make something work. If you aren't good at improvising, or if you want it to work out of the box without any modifications, this isn't the product for you-stick with the more expensive products.
